TUCSON, Ariz. – The James Madison University men’s golf team tied for eighth at the spring-opening 2014 Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 27-28. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Sewailo Golf Club (Par 71 – 7,262 yards) in Tucson, Ariz.
Starting out with sun in the 40s and improving throughout the day, Madison posted a 15-over 299 on the final day to finish at 43-over 895 in a tie with UTEP and Pacific. No. 4 California overcame a two-shot deficit starting the day and ran away with a team title at 1-over 853, defeating host Arizona by 14 shots at 16-over 868. No. 19 New Mexico was third at 18-over 870 as No. 25 Southern California was fourth at 20-over 872. New Mexico State and No. 38 Brigham Young tied for fifth at 21-over 873.
Junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) led the Dukes at 5-over 218 after a final-round 3-over 73, tying for 12th. Freshmen Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) shot his third consecutive 4-over 75 and tied for 37th at 12-over 225. Sophomore Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) was one shot back at 13-over 226 to tie for 44th. Junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and freshmen Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) wrapped up team’s effort in a tie for 48th with a three-round total of 16-over 229. Cal’s Brandon Hagy and Joel Stalter tied for medalist honors at 2-under 211.
The Dukes will take a month-and-a-half off from tournament play until Mon.-Tue., March 10-11 when they play at the Bash at the Beach Invitational. The event will be played at the Surf Golf & Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
