WILMINGTON, Del. - The James Madison men's golf team was unable to make up ground and finished eighth at the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 27-29. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Wilmington Country Club's South Course (Par 71 - 7,043 yds) in Wilmington, Del.
JMU shot its second-consecutive 19-over 303 to finish with a three-round total of 60-over 912 in eighth place. Second-round leader UNCW shot a tournament-best 4-over 288 in the final round to take the team title and the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional with a 32-over 884. Georgia State finished two shots back at 34-over 886 after a final-round 5-over 289. Old Dominion was third at 51-over 903, with VCU at 52-over 904 and George Mason with a 53-over 905 rounding out the top five teams.
Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) was Madison's top finisher in the tournament, shooting a 2-over 73 in the final round to tie for 14th at 12-over 225. Freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) also posted a top-20 finish in a tie for 16th, shooting a 13-over 226 including also posting a 2-over 73 in the final 18. Junior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) was next in a tie for 23rd after a final-round 6-over 77 gave him a final score of 16-over 229. Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) shot a 9-over 80 in the final round and tied for 40th with a 54-hole score of 21-over 234. Senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) rounded out Madison's team with a tie for 42nd at 22-over 235 after a final-round 9-over 80. Delaware's Greg Matthias, the individual leader through 36 holes, won the medalist honors at 4-over 217 after a final round 6-over 77, holding off a late rally by Georgia State's Davin White. White shot a final round 2-under 69 and finished as runner-up by one shot with a 54-hole total of 5-over 218.
