HARRISONBURG, Va., April 30, 2013 – The James Madison has announced the winners of the 2013 team awards. The team announced the winners at their end of year banquet early this month.
JMU also recognized the team’s three graduating seniors in midfielder Jenna Taylor (Midlothian, Va./James River), forward/back Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and forward Courtney Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent).
JMU Hockey Award – Rachel Wein
The JMU Hockey Award is voted on by the team and was presented to redshirt junior forward Rachel Wein (Perryville, Md./Perryville) for being a great teammate and representing JMU hockey with passion and pride.
360 Award – Jenna Taylor
The 360 Award is presented to a player who performed the best in multiple areas. Jenna Taylor earned the award for her work on the field, in the classroom, in the weight room, in fitness testing and with the US High Performance program over the summer.
Bulldog Award – Courtney Versfeld
Presented to Courtney Versfeld for being dedicated, loyal and being willing to run through a brick wall for JMU field hockey. Versfeld came to practice ready to compete and went 100-percent whether it was game day or practice sessions. Whether she was starting or subbing off the bench, her effort was consistently high despite multiple injuries and setbacks during her career.
Perseverance Award – Stephanie Tarafas
Awarded to redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Tarafas (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River). Tarafas redshirted due to an injury and has missed two previous springs due to injury. Her true perseverance came when her mom passed away early in the spring semester due to complications from cancer. Tarafas fought through adversity with her loss and continued to be an inspiration to her teammates.
