PHILADELPHIA, Pa., - April 26, 2012 - The James Madison track and field team qualified for ECAC competition in three out of five events on the first day at the Penn Relays on Thursday in Philadelphia, Pa. Madison will continue competition tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with the long jump.
In the Dukes' first event of the day, the 4x100-meter relay team qualified for ECAC competition with a finishing time of 47.47 seconds. Junior Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and sophomores Jordan Simmons (Plainfield, N.J./Bishop Ahr), Ashley Williams (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Ciarra Morris (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) competed in the event for JMU.
In the 4x400-meter relay, senior Jaclyn Smith (Arlington, Va./Yorktown), junior Whitney Staton (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), Morris and freshman Destiny Simmons (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) also qualified for postseason competition. The Dukes finished the race in 3:51.53.
The final qualifying mark for Madison again came from McDonald. She finished second out of 25 competitors in the long jump with a leap of 5.90 meters (19'4.25"). Both relays have previously qualified for ECAC competition, as has McDonald in the long jump competition.
Also competing on Thursday were freshman Daquaä Scott (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) and junior Christianna Moss (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry). Scott finished 20th in the shot put with a heave of 12.09 meters (39'8") while Moss finished in 25th in the discus with a throw of 40.30 meters (132'2").
