Track and Field Finishes 15 Inside the Top 10 at Colonial Relays, Liberty Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. April 7, 2012 - The James Madison track and field team finished 15 athletes inside the top-10 at two different meets Saturday.  The Dukes also had two ECAC qualifying relay teams at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.

At the Colonial Relays, JMU's 4x100-meter relay team took second with a time of 47.00 seconds.  Junior Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and sophomores Jordan Simmons (Plainfield, N.J./Bishop Ahr), Ashley Williams (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Ciarra Morris (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) comprised the Dukes' 4x100 qualifying team.  The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Jaclyn Smith (Arlington, Va./Yorktown), junior Whitney Staton (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), and freshmen Morgan Sheaffer (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and Destiny Simmons (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) finished in a time of 3:50.79, good for fifth place.

The Dukes' 4x200-meter relay teams finished with a second and seventh place.  McDonald, J. Simmons, Williams and Morris finished in a time of 1:38.04.  D. Simmons, senior Aubrie McAlpine (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone), junior Gabrielle Poore (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) and senior Brenna Johnston (Covesville, Va./Monticello) finished in 1:43.92.

In the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, Smith, Morris, Sheaffer, and senior Brittany Wilhelm (Stafford, Va./Brooke Pointe) took first place (4:02.94).  Juniors JaQuonna Lott (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) and Jaime Lott (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland), Wilhelm, and freshman Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) finished the event in third place (4:08.16).

The Dukes finished 11th out of 27 teams at the Colonial Relays after competing in just four events.

At the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, eight Dukes finished in the top 10, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles by freshman Jasmine Waddell (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) (14.88).  Waddell also finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.72).

In the shot put, freshman Daquaä Scott (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) heaved the rock 12.43 meters (40'9.5") to finish the event in eight place.  Sophomore Kristen Greene (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) also competed in the shot put.  Her throw of 12.22 meters (40'1.25") was good for ninth in the event.

Both Scott and Greene also competed in the discus throw alongside junior teammate Christianna Moss (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry).  Moss took seventh with a throw of 42.26 meters (138'8") while Scott and Greene took ninth and 10th, respectively.  Scott hit the 39.89 meter (130'10") mark while Greene's throw registered 39.26 meters (128'10").

JMU's final top-10 finisher came in the high jump.  Sophomore Sarah Jochem (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) reached 1.52 meters (4'11.75"), good for ninth place.

Madison returns to action Friday, April 13 at the Miami Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
