HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2011 - James Madison won seven individual events and one relay on Saturday at the JMU Collegiate Invitational at the JMU Track and Field Complex.
Freshman Jordan Simmons (Plainfield, N.J./Bishop Ahr) and junior Jaclyn Smith (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) each won a pair of events to lead the Dukes.
Simmons won the 100-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 11.79 seconds and was victorious in the 200 in 24.93. Smith placed first in the triple jump by more than two feet with an ECAC and personal-best leap measuring 12.15 meters (39'10 1/2"),
Smith also ran the first leg of JMU's first-place 1,600-meter relay team with sophomores Whitney Staton (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), Jaime Lott (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) and Gabrielle Poore (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson).
The foursome won the race in 3:55.30, just over six seconds ahead of the 'B' squad consisting of sophomore JaQuonna Lott (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland), junior Aubrie McAlpine (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone), sophomore Jennifer Monk (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) and sophomore Megan Barnes (Sterling, Va./Park View). They were second in 4:01.17.
Other individual winners included: sophomore Katie Harman (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), senior Alison Parris (Saint Leonard, Md./Patuxent), junior Brittany Wilhelm (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point)and sophomore Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East).
Harman took first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:42.03, and Parris pulled away on the final lap of the 3,000-meter race to win with a time of 10:05.25. Wilhelm took the 400-meter dash after crossing the line in 58.60 seconds, while McDonald took the long jump with a leap measuring 5.77 meters (18'11 1/4").
JMU had five other individuals with runner-up finishes on the afternoon.
McDonald surpassed the ECAC-qualifying standard in the 100 with a time of 11.97 seconds, and freshman Ashley Williams clocked a time of 25.06 in the 200. Monk finished just over a tenth-of-a-second off the lead pace in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.70 seconds.
In the field, freshman Lauren Privette (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley) recorded a mark of 5.60 meters (18'4 1/2") in the long jump, and freshman Kristen Greene (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) had a launch in the javelin measuring 35.83 meters (117'7").
