Frias Named CAA Track & Field Coach of the Year

RICHMOND, Va., June 28, 2012 -- James Madison's Ta' Frias has been selected the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in track and field by a vote of the league's head coaches. 

Frias was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year in women's track and field for the first time after guiding the Dukes to their first conference title.  JMU scored 132 points to edge past Virginia Commonwealth and Georgia State while capturing individual titles in six different events (high jump, long jump, 100 meters, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters).

In addition to winning the CAA team title, JMU tied for eighth place at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.  That tied for the second-best ECAC indoor finish in school history and the program's best performance at the ECAC meet since placing third in 1998.

Frias, a native of Richmond, Va., enters her fourth season as JMU's track and field coach in 2012-13.  native came to JMU with nine years of coaching experience.

George Mason junior Mandissa Marshall was chosen as the 2012 CAA Female Athlete of the Year in track and field and VCU freshman Kiara Porter was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year, and

Marshall captured the pole vault title at the CAA Championships for the second year in a row with a meet-record vault of 4.15 meters (13'7 1/4").  She tied for first place at the NCAA East Region Qualifying competition, which earned her a berth in the NCAA Championships. She also set a school record of 4.30 meters (14'1") and won the pole vault competition at the ECAC Outdoor Championships.

Porter was the CAA champion in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 53.24. She also was a member of the Rams' 4x100 relay team that captured a CAA title.  She placed fourth in the 400 meters at last week's USA Junior Outdoor Championships with a school-record mark of 53.07.

In addition to the 2012 major award winners in women's track and field, the following individuals and relay teams received All-CAA honors based on their performances at the CAA Championship.
