Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, 93-44 over Georgia Southern

HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 31, 2012 -- Junior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored a career-high 27 points to lead James Madison (6-6) to a 93-44 home win over Georgia Southern (1-10) in a New Year's Eve women's basketball contest at the JMU Convocation Center.

The Dukes posted their third consecutive win while Georgia Southern, playing its fifth straight road game, dropped its eighth game in a row.

Burkholder scored 18 of her 27 points on 3-pointers as she hit 6-of-9 from 3-point range.  She connected on 9-for-12 overall from the field and also had eight rebounds and a game-high four steals.  Her six treys were one below her career high.

All 10 of JMU's players scored, and two others hit double figures: senior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) with 14 and freshman guard Precious Hall (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) with 12.  Redshirt freshman guard Jazmon Gwathmey (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) had a game- and career-high 10 rebounds.

The Eagles were led in scoring by junior guard MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga./Jefferson) with 12 points.  She was the only GSU player to reach double figures.

JMU, which never trailed in the contest, jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the 15:17 mark, with all 11 points coming from Burkholder, Burkholder knocked down her first four field-goal attempts, including two 3-pointers, and also had four rebounds and two steals in that span.

The Dukes pulled out to a double-digit lead for good at 17-6 with 12:06 left in the opening half.  JMU led by as many as 23 (40-17 at 1:43) in the first half and entered halftime up 42-20.   The Eagles connected on 50 percent (8-16) of their shots from the field in the half but turned the ball over 14 times, and JMU took 37 shots to only 16 for Georgia Southern.

For the game JMU shot 50 percent (34-68) while GSU hit only 36 percent (15-42).  The Dukes out-rebounded the Eagles 41-24, and JMU committed a season-low seven turnovers while Georgia Southern finished with 25 turnovers.

NOTES:
* JMU's 93 points was a season high and the most points scored by the Dukes since a 93-45 victory at Georgia State on Feb. 24, 2011.  It was the most points JMU had scored at home since a 104-63 win over Maryland, Baltimore County on Dec. 18, 2008.
