HARRISONBURG, Va., May 30, 2013 – Senior Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team for women’s track & field/cross country, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday afternoon.
The Academic All-District Teams recognize student-athletes as top athletic and academic performers in one of eight geographic regions. District III for NCAA Division I universities encompasses Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, and thirteen women made the District III First Team. Gorman is one of just two athletes from the Commonwealth to make the squad, joined by Virginia’s Catherine White.
Each member of the eight district teams advances to the final ballot for the Capital One Academic All-America team, which will be announced in late June.
Gorman earned the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Scholar Athlete honor and was a finalist for the 2012-13 James Madison University Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. An Academic All-State (Virginia Sports Information Directors) and four-time President’s List honoree, she graduated from JMU in May with a degree in kinesiology and a grade-point average of 3.90.
During her time as a Duke, Gorman was an eight-time All-CAA runner for cross country and track & field. In her senior cross country season, she won the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference individual title and helped lead the Dukes to the ECAC team championship. She also won the JMU Open Invitational and placed fourth in the CAA Cross Country championships. For track & field, she set a facility record for the indoor 10,000-meter run at the Navy Field House with her win at the Navy Invitational and placed third in the outdoor 10,000-meter run at the 2013 CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
