WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Feb. 23, 2013 - The James Madison women's tennis team fell 5-2 at No. 37 William & Mary Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Dukes are now 2-3 overall this spring and 1-2 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents. The Tribe stretched its win streak to six matches and improved to 10-2 overall including 2-0 against league foes.
William & Mary claimed the doubles point after winning at both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles position. The nation's No. 4 doubles team of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans defeated senior Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County) and sophomore Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) 8-0, the reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week, to end the duo's three-match win streak. Anik Cepeda and Leeza Nemchinov solidified the doubles point for the Tribe with an 8-2 win over senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and freshman Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson), ending the pair's four-match win streak.
Coming out of doubles play, William & Mary carried its momentum into singles matches and won the first two duals to go up 3-0. Wirth, however, put the Dukes on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Sydney Smith at the No. 5 position. The freshman is now undefeated this spring as a solo competitor, boasting a 3-0 singles record in 2013.
The Tribe quickly rebounded and tallied the decisive fourth point when junior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) fell 6-2, 6-1 to Cepeda at the No. 3 position.
At the No. 6 slot, senior Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) claimed a three-set win over the Tribe's Jackie Lee to close out the match. Falling behind early after a 7-5 loss, Douglass quickly rebounded when she blanked Lee 6-0 in set two. She completed the comeback with a 6-3 win in set three for the point.
JMU next travels to Orlando, Fla., where the Dukes will face Penn, Ball State and Toledo over four days. JMU hits the courts with Penn on March 3 at 1 p.m. before taking on Ball State March 4 and Toledo March 6, both at 11 a.m.
