LAST MATCH-UP
12/01/11, Lynchburg, Va.: JMU
62, Liberty 58
SCOUTING LIBERTY
♦ The
Flames were picked by league coaches to win the Big South Conference for the
15th time in the last 16 seasons. They
are the reigning Big South champions, coming off a 24-9 season that ended in a
loss to No. 1 seeded-Notre Dame in the NCAA Championship. So far this season, Liberty holds a 4-3 overall record and a 1-0
conference record.
♦ Redshirt senior
guard Devon Brown, a 2008 co-state player of the year from Waynesboro High
School, returns to the area and is the Flames' lone selection to the Preseason
All-Conference team. She is the team's
leading scorer (18.3) and is tied for second in rebounds (6.6) and steals
(7). Brown is dangerous from the charity
stripe, making 34 of 39 baskets, and accounts for one-third of Liberty's made
3-pointers with 10.
♦ Redshirt
senior forward Tolu Omotola is tied with Brown for the team's second-most
rebounds (6.6). She is also the
second-leading scorer (10.0) and has contributed seven blocks.
♦ Junior
forward Jasmine Gardner, the third-leading scorer (7.3), leads the team with
7.9 boards per game.
♦ Liberty
holds a 14.3 rebounding margin over opponents, pulling down 48.0 rebounds per
game to 33.7 by opponents. The Flames,
however, are committing 10.3 more turnovers than their opponents, including 6.4
more steals per game by the opposition.
JMU FAST BREAK
♦ Senior
guard Tarik Hislop scored 22 points on Dec. 2 against Richmond to move into 10th
place on JMU's all-time career list with 1,390 points. She is currently averaging 18.9 ppg to lead
the team, and she has the second-most steals (10) and assists (19) for the
Dukes.
♦ Senior
forward Nikki Newman moved into sole possession of second place of JMU's career
blocked shots list (120 blocks) when she knocked two away on Sunday afternoon
vs. UR. She has 14 blocks to lead the
team and is tied for the team-high in steals (11).
♦ Freshman
guard Precious Hall scored a career-high 11 points against the Spiders in just
10 minutes off the bench. Fellow
freshman guard Angela Mickens added a career-high eight points, with six of
those points coming from the free throw line. Because of injuries, Mickens has
only seen action in five games this season, but is averaging 4.6 points and 2.4
assists over an average of 17.8 minutes off the bench.
♦ The Dukes
are currently pulling down 41.9 rebounds and are blocking 4.4 shots. JMU is averaging 7.4 steals, but is allowing
8.1 steals by opponents.
