Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at JU Amelia Island Collegiate

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - The James Madison women's golf team wrapped up its spring opener with a sixth-place finish at the JU Amelia Island Collegiate, Feb. 17-18. Hosted by Jacksonville University, the two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the Amelia National Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,029 yards) in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Starting the day in sixth, Madison battled but was unable to make up ground as team scores went up an average of four shots across the field in the final round. JMU posted a final day 21-over 309 to finish at 40-over 904. Florida International completed its wire-to-wire lead with a final round 12-over 300 and a 54-hole score of 5-under 859, 12 shots ahead of runner-up Kennesaw State at 7-over 871. Daytona State was third at 26-over 890, with host Jacksonville fourth at 30-over 894. Winthrop completed the top five one shot back at 31-over 895.

Senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) was the top JMU golfer, posting a team-best 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 3-over 219 in a tie for seventh. It was Mak’s second top-10 finish of the year and eighth of her career. Freshman Nicola Haynes (Newcastle-Upon-Tyle, England ) finished 22nd at 10-over 226, while junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) tied for 27th two shots back at 12-over 228. Junior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) tied for 38th at 15-over 231, with sophomore Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) tying for 65th at 28-over 244.

Camila Serrano of Florida International won a four-hole playoff with Daytona State’s Tiffany Chan to take medalist honors after the pair finished at 8-under 208 for the three-round event.

Madison returns to the course Mon.-Wed., March 3-5 at the 2014 Hurricane Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Miami, will be played at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Fla.
