Swimming and Diving Beats Radford at Virginia Tech Swimming Challenge

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va., Oct. 11, 2013 – The James Madison swimming and diving team picked up its second win in as many weeks over Radford as it went 1-3 at the 2013 Virginia Tech Annual Margaret Soulen Gilbert Breast Cancer Awareness Swim/Dive Meet at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center Friday.

The Dukes beat Radford 279-74 while falling to Virginia Tech 259-94, North Carolina 272.50-80.50 and Liberty 191-50-157.50. JMU ran its dual meet record to 2-3 on the season. Radford dropped to 0-5 while UNC went to 4-0, Virginia Tech to 3-1 and Liberty to 2-2.

Junior Susanne Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) recorded the best result of the day for Madison, placing second in the 50-yard freestyle. Gingher timed a 23.69, tying for her third-fastest time in her career. She was narrowly edged by UNC’s Hannah Lincoln by 0.05 seconds in the event.

Gingher also swam the leadoff leg for the Dukes in the 200-yard freestyle, teaming with senior Shannon Dubay (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), sophomore Carli Molano (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and freshman Jennifer Vieni (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) to finish fourth with a time of 1:36.76.

For the second consecutive week, redshirt freshman diver Taryn McLaughlin (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was the top Madison performer on the boards. She finished fourth on the one-meter with a score of 265.40 behind on the trio of Virginia Tech divers. On the three-meter, the reigning CAA Diver of the Week placed fifth with a score of 250.40. Sophomore Carly Alexander (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) placed seventh on the one-meter (246.85) and eighth on the three-meter (225.05) while freshman Olivia Lehman (Dayton, Ohio/Centreville) placed 11th on the one-meter (212.50) and three-meter (197.20) boards.

Other top performances for the Dukes were junior Sin Hye Won (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) placing third in the 50-breastroke (29.73), junior Aimee Hooper (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) placing fourth on in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.01 and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.96), senior Kelsey Holmgaard (Roanoke, Va./George Mason) placing eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.13) and sophomore Kacy Edsall (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) placing 10th in the 50-yard backstroke (27.36).

JMU returns to the pool Oct. 25-26 in Morgantown, W.Va., in the West Virginia Invitational.
