67, JMU 50
SCOUTING DREXEL
♦ The
Dragons were selected to finish the CAA in fourth place in the preseason
coaches' poll. Drexel is off to an 8-4
record and a 1-0 start in conference play with Sunday's 76-55 win over Towson (tied
for CAA preseason No. 9).
♦ Junior guard Hollie Mershon leads the Dragons and the CAA in points per game (17.6). She also leads Drexel in
rebounds (7.8), free throw percentage (85.2%), assists (4.3) and steals
(1.7). Mershon was a 2012 preseason
All-CAA First Team selection, the lone pick from the Drexel line-up.
♦ Junior forward Nicki Jones is blocking an average of
1.7 shots per game to lead the Dragons, knocking away twice as many as the
second-leading player in blocks, junior forward Taylor Wootton. Wootton is
averaging 0.8 blocks per game and is second in points per game with 8.8.
♦ Through the first 12 games of the season,
Drexel holds a 9.8 point advantage over opponents. The team is building the bulk of its leads in
the first half, outscoring opponents 30.2 to 21.8 over the first 20 minutes.
♦ Drexel holds just a 0.3 rebounding advantage
over opponents. While the Dragons lead
opponents in defensive rebounds (23.3 to 20.4), opponents are pulling down more
offensive boards (12.4 to 9.8).
♦ The Dukes began their CAA slate with a 60-39 victory over UNCW in Wilmington on Sunday, Jan. 6. The victory pushed JMU over the .500 mark for the first time this season as the Dukes now hold a 7-6 record.
♦ Drexel won two of its three meetings with JMU last year, with wins coming in their CAA semifinal match-up and a 60-43 win at the JMU Convocation Center on Jan. 12, 2012, the Dragons' first regular-season victory on JMU's home court. JMU won 56-51 in overtime at Drexel on Feb. 9, 2012.
♦ Junior guard Kirby Burkholder earned conference Co-Player of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 6 after posting a career-high 27 points against Georgia Southern (Dec. 31) and a game-high 15 points at UNCW. She finished the week shooting 60.9 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe as well as grabbing 8.5 rebounds per game and committing 3.5 thefts per game.
♦ Senior guard Tarik Hislop ushered in 2013 by moving up the JMU all-time leader boards in career points, assists and made free throws. With seven points Jan. 6 at UNCW, Hislop now has 1,466 total points for her career and sits eighth on the Dukes' all-time scoring list after passing Sue Manelski (1981-85; 1,465 pts). She also passed Manelski on the all-time made free throws list to take over sole possession of fourth (396). Hislop cracked the top 10 in career assists, moving into ninth place from 12th with 308 assists over her career, surpassing Lesley Dickinson (2003-07) and Tamera Young (2004-08), who each had 302 during their time at JMU.
