MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The James Madison men’s golf team was impressive in its opening round in posting an 8-under score to take the lead at the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 8. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Madison got it going in the opening round, with three under-par individual totals leading to an 8-under 280, four shots ahead of Northern Iowa in second. Akron and IUPUI are tied for third 3-under 285, with Jacksonville State in fifth at 2-under 286.
Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for second at 5-under 67 with IUPUI’s Rob van de Vin, one shot behind J.T. Poston of Western Carolina at 6-under 66. Junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) is two shots back of Pattaropong at 3-under 69, with sophomore Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) tied for 10th at 2-under 70. Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md.) shot a 2-over 74 in his first collegiate round, while junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C.) is tied for 43rd at 4-over 76.
The Dukes will start off No. 1 at 8:15 tomorrow morning in the second round, playing with Northern Iowa and Akron.
