Men's Golf Places Sixth at Donald Ross Intercollegiate

MORGANTON, N.C. – The James Madison men’s golf team improved on the final day to finish sixth at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate, Oct. 14-15. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Appalachian State, was played at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club (Par 70 - 6,718 yards) in Morganton, N.C.

Madison improved another shot in its final round under tough conditions, shooting a 3-over 283 to finish at 14-over 854 to move up one spot to place sixth. Second-round leader Wofford finished at 16-over 824 and held on for a two-shot victory over Davidson at 14-under 826. Elon was third at even-par 840, with Appalachian State at 9-over 849 and Presbyterian at 10-over 850 completing the top five.

Juniors Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) tied for 13th at 1-under 209, with Weiss posting a 2-under 68 in the final 18 and Smith a 1-under 69. Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) tied for 28th at 4-over 214. Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 57th at 14-over 224, while senior  Tucker Koch(Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) tied for 64th at 16-over 226. Playing as an individual, sophomore Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) tied for 37th at 7-over 217 following a final round 2-over 72.

Wofford’s George Perkovich and Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman were co-medalists at 8-under 202, one shot ahead of Davidson’s Todd Eckstein at 7-under 203.

The Dukes will wrap up their fall slate on Sun.-Tue., Oct. 20-22 at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Collegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
