James Madison University is committed to the academic needs of its student-athletes as shown by the university’s outstanding NCAA graduation rates. A major reason student-athletes are successful in the classroom is because of the support services provided through academic advising and student development.

Advisors in Student-Athlete Services provide individual assistance to all student-athletes throughout their college careers. As members of the university’s advising system, the advisors in Student-Athlete Services also act as the official academic advisors to freshman and undeclared upperclassmen. JMU’s student-athletes also participate in a wide range of counseling and student development, career exploration, leadership, and study skills programs throughout their tenure at the university.

Office of Student-Athlete Services Responsibilities:

  • Weekly meetings with first year student-athletes
  • Weekly meetings with athletes in academic difficulty
  • Help develop class schedules
  • Assist in exploration and choosing of different major fields
  • Monitor progress towards graduation according to JMU and NCAA eligibility guidelines
  • Communicate with faculty
  • Distribute semester grade progress reports
  • Participate in recruiting
  • Facilitate career development programs
  • Coordinate tutors
  • Coordinate laptop loan program
  • Facilitate summer orientation sessions for incoming freshman student-athletes
  • Nomination of student-athletes for awards and scholarships
  • Implementation of NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program
Other programs provided by the University:
  • An educational skills laboratory that examines students' study habits and works to improve listening, note-taking, test-taking, reading and comprehension skills.
  • A writing laboratory where students receive assistance in building vocabulary and grammar skills and preparing for graduate or professional school examinations.
  • A Reading and Writing Resource Center and a Science and Mathematics Learning Center that provides assistance to freshmen.
  • A Reading Lab that provides diagnostic services for students with reading difficulties.
  • A First-Year Involvement (FYI) program designed to assist freshmen in their adjustment to university life.
  • An Office of Disability Services that ensures the university complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to guarantee the right of all students with documented disabilities equal access to an education.
  • A supplemental Instruction (SI) program which assists student achievement and retention. SI features students helping students complete selected historically challenging courses.
