ELON, N.C., Oct. 27, 2013 – Sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) and freshman Miljan Ruzic (Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) teamed up to win the doubles title in the A1 Doubles Draw of the Elon Fall Invitational on Sunday. The duo was a perfect 3-0 in the tournament.
Stirling and Ruzic won their third consecutive close match, edging USC Upstate’s Ramon Simonetti and Carlos Tajes 8-6 to win the Dukes’ first title of the season, in either singles or doubles. They won their three matches by a combined four games.
Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) was the lone JMU player competing for a title in singles play. The sophomore lost 6-1, 7-6 (5) to Elon’s Jordan Kaufman in the finals, falling to 7-3 during the fall season.
The Dukes had two doubles teams turn in runner-up showings. Branth and freshman Mason Smith (Norfolk, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate School) dropped their finals match 8-6, while freshmen Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) and Alex Berdnikoff (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School for Athletes) lost 8-1 in the championship match.
The Elon Invitational was the final competition of the fall for the Dukes.
