HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison cross country team begins its 2012 season this Saturday with the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Va., at the Virginia Horse Center. This marks the second straight season the Dukes will open at VMI.
JMU will send returning seniors Jacki Ferrance (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Michelle Savarese (Middletown, N.J.) to the starting line, as well as sophomores Rachel Hagen (Sterling, Va.), Kelsey Langton (Hamilton Square), and Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va.). They will be joined by freshmen Emily Cole (Stafford, Va.), Laura Dobbs (Glen Allen, Va.) and Kathleen Stewart (Holland, Pa.).
Head coach David Rinker hopes to use this race to measure how well his freshmen stick to a race plan in their first collegiate meet as well as to see the patience and leadership of his upperclassmen.
"I am extremely excited about this group from the standpoint we have a great mix of experience and untested talent. Each year has its own set of challenges, and this year is no different."
Those challenges are set to begin Saturday, September 1, when JMU lines up against VMI and Longwood. The race is slated to start at 10 a.m.
