Three Track and Field/Cross Country Athletes Are Finalists for JMU’s Top Awards

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 - Three members of the 2011 James Madison track and field and cross country teams were recognized as finalists for the top awards presented by JMU Intercollegiate Athletics for 2011-12. 

Brittany Wilhelm (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Stacey Nobles (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) were each finalists for the Gary '81 & Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum JMU 2011-12 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. 

Alison Parris (Saint Leonard, Md., Patuxent H.S.) was a finalist for JMU 2011-12 Female Athlete of the Year honor.

The award winner and finalists were recognized Monday night at the annual JMU student-athlete awards banquet.

Wilhelm was a member of the 2010 and 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Champion cross country teams.  She has been honored with the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award for cross country every year since 2008 and well as earning the award for track and field in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

In 2011, Wilhelm was honored on the All-East indoor track and field team for her part in a seventh-place finish in the distance medley relay competition at the Easter College Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships.  She was also named All-East in 2010 after a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Wilhelm is a President's List student majoring in mathematics with a minor in coaching education and pre-professional secondary education.

Nobles was also a member of the 2010 and 2011 CAA Champion Cross Country Teams.  She was named the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Nobles is a Dean's List student majoring in interdisciplinary liberal studies with a minor in elementary education.

Nobles has been part of the All-CAA cross country team each year since 2009.  She placed third in the 2011 CAA Cross Country Championships as well as placing second in 2010 and fourth in 2009.  She has received the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award for cross country each year since 2009 and also received the award for track and field in 2010 and 2011.  Nobles was also named the 2009 CAA Cross Country Rookie of the Year.


Parris, a 2011 graduate, was the CAA 5,000 meter Champion in 2011.  She was named All-East in 2011 for her third place finish at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships as well as in 2012 for a seventh-place finish in the 3,000 meters at the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

In 2010, Parris was the CAA Cross Country Runner of the Year as well as the CAA Cross Country Champion.  She was named All-Region after 13th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships in 2010 as well as All-Region after ninth place 2009 and 18th place 2008.

She ranks among the top performers in JMU history in five events.  She holds third all-time in the 3,000 meters (9:36:57) and 5,000 meters (16:32.57).  She is fourth all-time in the 800 meters (2:10.58) and eighth all-time in both the 1,000 meters (2:53.71) and the mile (4:53.58).
