Emergency situations may arise at any given moment during an athletic event. When they do occur, it is necessary that an emergency care plan be established to clearly delineate the policies and procedures in order to deliver effective and efficient care. Expedient action must be taken in order to provide the best possible care to the athletes with emergency and/or life threatening conditions. The development and implementation of an emergency action plan will help to ensure that the quality of care provided to our athletes is at its highest. This plan was written with this in mind and provides a detailed description of the emergency action policies of the Sports Medicine Staff at James Madison University. It is the goal of the Sports Medicine Staff that this emergency care plan will aid in minimizing the time needed to provide an immediate response to a potentially life-threatening situation or medical emergency.
Athletic organizations have an inherent duty to develop an emergency action plan that may be instituted immediately when necessary and to provide appropriate standards of health care to all sports participants. As athletic injuries may occur at any time and during any activity, the sports medicine staff must be well prepared. This preparation involves development of an emergency action plan, proper medical coverage of events, maintenance of emergency equipment and supplies, utilization of appropriate emergency medical personnel, and emergency care education of all members of the sports medicine staff.
