HARRISONBURG, Va., May 9, 2009 --Come join the James Madison softball team at Ham's on Sunday night as the Dukes find out their when and where they are to play in next weekend's NCAA Regionals.
The NCAA selection committee will announce the regional brackets for the 2009 NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Dukes earned the Colonial Athletic Association's automatic bid by way of winning the conference tournament this week in Hempstead, N.Y. Fourth-seeded JMU opened the championships with a 2-0 win over seven-time defending champs and the tournament's top-seed, Hofstra. After beating the Pride, Madison advanced to the championship game on the strength of a 1-0 win over Towson before clinching the title with an 11-1 win over Towson on Friday.
Senior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after going 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA. The first-team All-CAA selection allowed just five hits, one run, walked three and struck out 14 in 12 innings pitched. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County), junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and junior left fielder Chel'sea Ryan (Sandston, Va./Henrico).
The Dukes will enter the NCAA tournament with a record of 35-14, including a 20-6 mark outside of the CAA. JMU set a team record for neutral site record at 11-4 and also added a 10-6 mark on the road.
The softball team claimed the third conference championship for James Madison University this year, joining the field hockey and football Dukes, and will be the sixth to make a postseason appearance.
