  • JMU opened its season on Feb. 15 with a 14-11 win against Virginia Tech at home.
  • Junior Ali Curwin earned CAA Player of the Week honors for her play against the Hokies, scoring four goals and notching two assists in the win.
  • In the most recent IWLCA Coaches poll (Feb. 17), Florida is ranked No. 7 while JMU is receiving votes.  In the only Brine Women’s Media poll (Feb. 10), the Gators are ranked No. 4 and received one first-place vote.

 Game Notes:

  • The Dukes have earned 11 straight wins after a 69-58 victory at Drexel on Feb. 16. They shot 54.3-percent from the floor, including 53.3-percent from beyond the arc.
  • Junior Toia Giggetts (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) scored 10 points against the Dragons, marking her 16th-consecutive game in double figures. The stretch is tied for the 10th-longest on the JMU all-time chart.
  • JMU can clinch at least a tie for the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship and the top seed in the CAA Tournament with a win over the Blue Hens on Thursday.
  • Madison and Delaware have met 26 times in their series history. Each team has won 13 meetings, with Delaware having won three of the last four, but JMU winning the most recent meeting, 87-51 in Harrisonburg early this season.

 Game Notes:

  • James Madison returns to action with a four-game home series against Binghamton. The series opens Friday, continues Saturday with a doubleheader, and wraps up Sunday.
  • The Dukes are coming off a 14-7 win over visiting Longwood on Tuesday. The Lancers scored four runs in the first inning, but the Dukes responded with 14 straight runs.
  • Binghamton opened its season with a three-game series at Duke. The Bearcats dropped both games ol a doubleheader on Saturday, before bouncing back with a 7-6 win on Sunday.
  • Sophomore right-hander Mark Gunst will make his second start of the season. He took a no-decision in the Dukes' season opening loss to East Carolina, giving up four runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out three in five innings of work.

 Game Notes:

  • The Dukes are coming off a weekend that saw them go 4-1 at the UCF Holiday Inn Classic in Orlando, Fla.
  • The Dukes picked up wins over Florida A&M, Middle Tennessee and twice beat Illinois-Chicago in the three-day event. Their lone loss came to UCF which is off to the best start in school history at 6-0.
  • JMU went 3-2 in last year's NFCA Leadoff Classic, picking up wins over DePaul, UC Davis and No. 14/17 USF while dropping decisions to Indiana and UL Lafayette.
  • This is the first-ever meeting between JMU and Rutgers.

 Game Notes:

  • Sophomore catcher Erica Field (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for her performance at last week's UCF Holiday Inn Classic.
  • Field hit .438, going 7-for-16 at the plate, in five games a week ago. She had a team-best seven RBIs and collected four extra-base hits (three doubles and a triple). She hit safely in four of the five games over the weekend and had two hits in three contests.
  • JMU is 0-1 all-time against UL Lafayette after dropping a 9-1, six-inning decision to the Ragin' Cajuns a year ago at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Dukes committed two errors in the game that led to four unearned runs for UL Lafayette.

 Game Notes:

  • The James Madison track & field team will send athletes to two separate events this weekend, with the majority of the team competing at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.
  • Many of the Dukes' athletes were given last weekend off to rest after the Liberty Quad meet, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved to Monday due to inclement weather.
  • Junior Nicole Gilbert finished third in the pentathlon at Liberty, totaling the fourth-best point total in JMU history. It was the second pentathlon of the season for Gilbert, who competed well at George Mason, but was hindered by a DQ in the long jump.

 Game Notes:

  • The first game of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for seven innings, while the second will be a nine-inning contest.
  • The Dukes will start junior right-hander Chris Huffman in the opening game Saturday. In his first start of the season, Huffman gave up just two runs and struck out seven batters in a 5-2 win over No. 34 East Carolina.
  • JMU holds a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series. The teams splt their four-game series last season.
  • Sophomore shortstop Kyle Weston has multiple hits in three of the first four games. He leads the team in average (.412), hits (7) and runs scored (5).

  • Ty McFarland, Kevin Husum and Chad Caroll share JMU's team lead with four RBIs apiece. McFarland is tops on the team with 10 total bases.
  • John Howell led Binghamton at the plate in its season-opening series against Duke. In the two games he played, Howell went 4-for-7 with a triple.

  • Senior Emily Rhoads posted four goals against the Hokies, including the 14th goal of the day, to tie for game-high scoring honors.
  • Junior Stephanie Finley tallied a team-high tying six points against Virginia Tech as she was a part of six of the Dukes’ 14 goals (three goals, three assists).
  • Jacksonville picked up its first win of 2014 on Feb. 15 with a 20-13 victory over Colorado.  The Dolphins fell 21-7 to Syracuse to open the season and fell 21-5 at Florida in their second game of the spring campaign.

 Game Notes:

  • Junior pitcher Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) earned CAA Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time in her career this week, for her performance in last weekend's UCF Holiday Inn Classic.
  • Kiefer went 2-1 with a save and a 1.40 ERA in four appearances. The right-hander struck out 12 compared to one walk in 15 innings of work. Opponents scoured four runs, three earned, on 14 hits with just three extra-base knocks against the two-time All-CAA performer.
  • The Dukes are 1-0 all-time against Illinois State having beat them 3-2 in eight innings a year ago. Left-hander Jailyn Ford (Hot Springs, Va./Bath County) earned the win after tossing an eight-inning complete game.

 Game Notes:

  • Senior utility player Cassidy Clayton (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough) hit .500 last weekend for Madison, going 6-for-12 at the plate. The lefty had two doubles and three RBIs at the plate for JMU.
  • Three other players collected at least six hits on the weekend for Madison led by Erica Field's seven. Sophomore second baseman Hannah Hayes (LaCrosse, Va./Kenston Forest) went 6-for-13 with two runs and two RBIs to hit .462 while freshman outfielder Tahli Moore (Sydney, Australia/Loreto Normanhurst College) also hit .462 with six hits in 13 at-bats.
  • The Dukes are 1-1 all-time against South Florida, dropping a 7-4 decision to the Bulls at USF in 2010 before downing 14th-ranked USF in last year's NFCA Leadoff Classic. It was the highest-ranked foe the Dukes have ever defeated.

  • Sophomores Robert Stirling and Maxi Branth and freshman Sebastian Salinas and Miljan Ruzic all posted individual wins in the Dukes most recent win, a 4-3 decision over Georgia Southern. Ruzic and Stirling teamed up for a win in doubles play.
  • UMBC has shut out its opponent in all three of its victories, including a 6-0 win over Morgan State in its most recent matchup

  • Freshman Annie Johnson had the best meet of her young collegiate career, posting two top-five finishes Mondat at the Liberty Quad. Johnson took fourth in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash.
  • After qualifying for the final heat with a fourth-place finish in the prelimaries, junior Jasmine Waddell improved her time in the finals and finished third in the 60-meter hurdles.

  • Harman has JMU's top time this season in both the 1,000-meter run (2:55.69) and the mile run (4:51.73).
  • Mundell has been the Dukes' second-fastest runner in the mile this season. She qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 4:57.37 at Penn State's Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup.

  • This season, The Dukes have had just five games without at least three players scoring in double figures. Ten players have scored in double figures at least once in 2013-14.
  • Senior Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) is ranked 12th in the nation in 3-point field goals per game as she sinks 3.08 from long range per outing. With 258 made 3-pointers in her time with Madison, she is second on the JMU career 3-pointers chart as well as eighth on the CAA career 3-pointers chart.
  • JMU ranks fifth in the nation in 3-point field-goal defense, allowing opponents to score on just 24.9 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc.
  • JMU leads the all-time series with Hofstra 14-8, including having won five straights. The record includes a 77-50 win at Hofstra on Jan. 19 earlier this season.

  • The Dukes got a pair of wins from sophomroe pitcher Jailyn Ford (Hot Springs, Va./Bath County) last weekend. The left-hander went 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in three games started. She struck out 11 and threw one complete game in 16 1/3 innings of work.
  • Ford and senior shortstop Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) tied for the team lead in runs, scoring seven apiece last weekend. Ford hit .400 with three doubles and six hits in 15 at-bats while Sandy went 5-for-15 (.333), adding a double, a triple and two RBIs.
  • JMU is 1-0 all-time against DePaul, having beaten the Blue Demons 7-5 in last year's NFCA Leadoff Classic.
