BLACKSBURG, Va., Jan. 25, 2014 – Junior Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and freshman Ebony Owusu-Sampah (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) highlighted the individual performances by the James Madison track and field team with third-place finishes Saturday on the second and final day of competition at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational. The Dukes’ distance medley relay team turned in a runner-up showing.

Westbrook led a trio of JMU runners that finished in the top 10 of 26 competitors in the 800-meter run. Westbrook crossed the line in 2:15.62, while freshman Lillie Brown (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) (2:17.23) and freshman Carol Strock (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (2:18.60) took seventh and eighth, respectively. Pitt’s Evann Thompson won the race in 2:12.91.

Owusu-Sampah, who finished seventh in the triple jump on Friday, took third out of 31 athletes in the long jump on Saturday. Her distance of 5.58 meters was just ahead of her teammate, freshman Kennedy King (Hampton, Va./Phoebus), who took fourth with a leap of 5.56 meters.

In addition to her solid showing in the 800, Strock joined freshman Tessa Mundell (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), junior Destiny Simmons (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) and senior Katie Harman (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) on the second-place distance medley relay team. The Dukes finished with an ECAC-qualifying time of 11:46.20, far ahead of the third-place Maryland (11:54.55). North Carolina State won the event in 11:43.35.

For the second straight event freshman Morgan Crewe (Emporia, Va./Greensville County) put her name in JMU’s indoor record book in the high jump. Crewe, the champion in the event at the Navy Winter Invitational two weeks ago, finished 11th out of 28 at Virginia Tech, clearing 1.62 meters for the 10th-best height in JMU indoor history.
