HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 10, 2013 – James Madison senior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) received yet another postseason award following her great senior season as she was named to the Division I Women’s Soccer First Team by the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
Sparks, the Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year, has also been selected to the VaSID All-State First Team, the All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team and the All-CAA First Team, following a season in which she helped lead the Dukes to a conference regular season title.
The senior anchored a JMU defense that allowed just 21 goals in 19 games during the regular season, including a league-low seven goals in eight CAA contests. She also contributed offensively for the Dukes by scoring three goals and tying for the team lead with seven assists.
Sparks finished her career with 18 assists, which is tied for 10th all-time at JMU. She has also fared well in the classroom, consistently earning JMU Athletic Director Scholar Athlete Honors.
St. John’s sophomore Rachel Daly was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year by the ECAC, while Georgetown senior Emily Menges was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Harvard’s Margaret Purce took home Rookie of the Year honors.
