  • This is the opening game of the JMU Invitational with the Dukes hosting Ohio, Norfolk State and UMBC for a two-day, four-game event.
  • JMU faces either UMBC or Norfolk State in the Championship/Consolation round of the tournament depending on the results from Sunday’s games.
  • Redshirt senior guard/forward Nikki Newman grabbed 13 rebounds for Madison during the St. John’s Chartwells Holiday Classic to give her 720 for her career. She ranks 10th in school history and trails ninth place Katherine Johnson by 19 rebounds. Against Vanderbilt, she added six rebounds to push her career total to 726.
  • This is the first meeting between JMU and Ohio.

 Game Notes:

  • JMU faces either UMBC or Norfolk State in the Championship/Consolation round of the tournament depending on the results from Sunday’s games.
  • In Madison’s win over St. John’s on Dec. 15, the Dukes held the Red Storm to 13 points during the first half. It was the fewest points allowed by a JMU team in a half since holding Maine to 10 points in the second half of an 88-34 win at the Convocation Center on Dec. 28, 2012.
  • JMU is a combined 13-5 against it potential opponents in the championship/consolation round. The Dukes are 6-0 all-time against UMBC and 7-5 against Norfolk State. The last meeting with UMBC occurred on Dec. 18, 2008 in Harrisonburg, Va., with Madison coming away with a 104-63 victory.
  • Norfolk State has not squared off with James Madison since Dec. 21, 2003. JMU won that meeting 69-48 at the Convocation Center.

  • All eight of JMU’s wins this season have come by double digits with nine of their 11 games being decided by 10 or more points. The only two contests decided by less than 10 was Wright State’s last-second win in the final game of the Gulf Coast Showcase and Vanderbilt's overtime win
  • JMU has had the CAA Player of the Week four times this season with three different players collecting the accolade. Senior guard, and Preseason CAA Player of the Year, Kirby Burkholder has garnered the recognition twice while sophomore guard Precious Hall and junior forward Toia Giggetts have each earned it once.
  • North Carolina is ranked No. 14/13 in the country with a 9-2 record, including a 5-1 mark at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • JMU and UNC have played each other twice in their series history. Each team has won once with UNC winning the last meeting on Nov. 23, 1980, a 100-59 win in Harrisonburg.

  • JMU opens its 2014 indoor track and field season at the Navy Winter Invitational.
  • The Dukes will compete in their first indoor meet since closing out last year's indoor season with an impressive 16th-place finish out of 53 teams at the ECAC Championships.
  • JMU returns all four runners - Tiel Westbrook, Morgan Sheaffer, Kelsey Langton and Erin Lopresti - from the 4x800 relay team that won the ECAC title in a school-record time of 8:46.9.
  • Head coach Ta' Frias is set to begin her fifth season at JMU. She was named the CAA Coach of the Year following the 2012 season.

 Game Notes:

  • The Dukes open up Colonial Athletic Association play after going 15-3 in the league a year ago and finishing second. They are the last team to compete in CAA play with their conference open date coming during the opening weekend of league play.
  • Madison ranks 23rd in the nation in rebounding margin at +10.5 per game. The Dukes have outrebounded their opponent in all but one game this season. The only time JMU has failed to pull in more boards that its opponent was in Sunday’s matchup at St. John’s when each team finished with 37 rebounds.
  • Delaware sits in second place in the CAA with a 6-2 record, but drop its most recent contest at Princeton. UD fell in overtime to the Tigers, 84-80.
  • Delaware has won three straight in the series to open up a 13-12 lead in the all-time series. Last season the Blue Hens won both games against Madison, winning by seven in Harrisonburg and one at home.
