HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 8, 2013 – As part of the Homecoming Celebration last weekend on the campus of James Madison University, the JMU softball team welcomed back 12 alumni for a day of celebration.

The alumni teamed up with this year’s seniors to take on the other members of the current roster in the annual alumni game. Following the game, the team hosted a tailgate and took in the Dukes’ football game against Villanova.

“It was really great to be back on campus and to spend time with so many members of the JMU softball community,” former shortstop Ashley Burnham (2009-12) said. “We all had a lot of fun and look forward to doing it again next year! Thanks to the coaching staff for welcoming us all back.”

Head Coach Mickey Dean added, “What a great event we had with the alumni game and football tailgate! It was nice getting to know past players and enjoying the intermingling of former players and our current roster. We look forward to the growth of our alumni weekend in future years.”

Joining Burnham among the alumni were first baseman Kaitlyn Barbour (2010-13), pitcher/utility player Jenny Clohan (2006-09), second baseman Michelle Clohan (2009-11), utility player Haley Johnson (2010-13), third baseman Amber Kirk (2006-09), utility player Casey Mansfield (2009-11), first baseman/outfielder Shannon Moxey (2007-10), third baseman Lauren Robison (2008-11), catcher Megan Shinaberry (2010-13), catcher Katie Spitzer (2008-11) and second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (2006-09).

“Being back on campus with everyone this past weekend certainly made for a great weekend,” Johnson said. “It reminded me of how fortunate I am to have been able to play with, and get to know, such amazing teammates and coaches. It was like we never left.”

The upcoming 2014 season marks the five year anniversary of JMU winning the CAA Championship. Several members of that team were in the group of alumni back this weekend, including Burnham, Jenny Clohan, Michelle Clohan, Kirk, Mansfield, Moxey, Robison, Spitzer and Wernsing.

“I was feeling nostalgic returning to JMU, especially being back at the field with my sister Michelle, former teammates and current players,” Jenny Clohan said. “It was great to be able to reconnect with the girls I spent four years playing with and laughing about early morning conditioning, bus rides and many other memories.”
