HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 27, 2013 - The James Madison women's soccer team clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title with a 2-2 tie at Hofstra on Sunday. Senior Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) and freshman Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) scored goals for the Dukes.
As the top seed in the CAA Tournament, the Dukes (14-4-1, 6-1-1 CAA) will host both semifinal games on Nov. 8, and the championship game on Nov. 10. All games will be played at University Park.
It was a back-and-forth game Sunday, with JMU quickly scoring the first goal of the game. Wilson tallied her sixth goal of the season just 16 seconds after the opening whistle to put the Dukes up 1-0.
Wilson has scored four goals in the past four games. She is now tied for fifth on JMU's all-time list with 30 in her career.
Hofstra (9-5-3, 3-2-3 CAA) responded with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the half. Jeannine Molleda scored in the 25th minute, and Leah Galton registered her eighth goal of the season five minutes later.
JMU turned things around in the second half. After being out-shot 10-4 in the first half, the Dukes matched the Pride's 11 shots in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
One of those 11 shots was the equalizer by Herndon. Her seventh goal of the season came in the 69th minute.
The Dukes took control early in the first overtime period, firing four shots, including two on goal, in the first 2:31 of play. But neither team was able to score in the 20 minutes of extra time, giving the Dukes their first tie of the season.
Sophomore goalie Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./Stone Bridge) made four saves for JMU, while Friederike Mehring stopped five shots for Hofstra.
The Dukes will have a bye in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament. They will play the winner of UNCW and Hofstra on Friday, Oct. 8, at University Park.
