BROOKLINE, Mass., Oct. 25, 2013 – Junior Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and senior Haley Miller (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) scored goals to lead the James Madison women's soccer team to a 2-0 win at Northeastern in a battle of Colonial Athletic Association first-place teams.
The Dukes (14-4, 6-1 CAA) and the Huskies (5-8-3, 5-2) entered the game in a three-way tie with William & Mary for first place in the conference. The Tribe tied Hofstra 3-3 Friday night, putting the Dukes all alone atop the CAA with one game remaining in the regular season.
JMU cannot finish any lower than second, clinching a first-round bye in the conference tournament. A win or a William & Mary loss/tie to Northeastern on Sunday would give the Dukes the top seed, which means they would host the semifinal and championship rounds.
Sophomore Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made four saves Friday night to post her sixth shutout of the season. She is one shutout shy of tying Suzanne Wilson’s single-season record by a sophomore, and two away from matching Diane Wszalek (2010) and Jessica Hussey (2002) for the overall single-season record.
The Dukes registered just one shot on goal in the first half but made it count, as Hyland scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the fifth minute. Freshman Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) recorded an assist on the score.
With Northeastern putting on pressure, leading in shots and shots on goal the entire game, Miller gave JMU some breathing room in the 63rd minute with her second goal of the season. Senior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) assisted on the goal with a long throw-in that Miller headed in to the lower left corner.
JMU travels to play Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. A win would give the Dukes their first-ever outright CAA regular season championship. They have shared the title twice. A win would also match the program record of 15 wins in a single regular season.
