HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 20, 2013 – Junior Sam Lofton (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) and senior Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) scored goals late in the second half to lead the James Madison women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting UNCG in a non-conference game Friday night.
Through 81 minutes of play, JMU outshot UNCG 14-6 but had nothing to show for it. Lofton changed that in the 82nd minute with her first goal of the season, a strike from 25 yards out to the bottom left corner. Senior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) tallied her team-leading fourth assist on the play.
The Dukes never gave the Spartans an opportunity to tie the game, controlling the ball for the remainder of the game. Wilson put the finishing touches on the final score with her second goal of the season, beating the goalie one-on-one with under a minute left in regulation. Junior Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) dribbled into the box and set up the play with a nice pass. The assist gives her a team-high eight points.
Wilson’s goal, the 26th of her career, moved her into a tie with Tasha Ellis (1995-97) for 10th on the Dukes’ all-time list. She is two goals behind Kerri O’Connell (1990, 92-93) for ninth all-time.
Sophomore Ellen Forrest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made three saves to notch her sixth win and second shutout of the season. Jamie Simmons made four saves for the Spartans.
The Dukes improved to 6-3-0 with their third straight win. The winning streak is the longest since they won three straight in August-September of the 2011 season. The Spartans, the defending regular season champs in the Southern Conference, fell to 4-4-0, losing their first road game after starting the season 3-0.
JMU will travel to Longwood on Sunday for the first ever meeting between the two teams.
