Men's Golf Ties For Fifth at Golfweek Program Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The James Madison men’s golf team struggled in the final round and tied for fifth at the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 8-10. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at True Blue Golf Plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C.

Starting the day with a one-stroke lead, Madison was unable to put four low scores together and finished at 13-over 301 in the final round and a three-round total of 1-over 865, tying with Old Dominion and Western Carolina. In second heading into the final round, Akron posted the final-round best score of 3-under 285 to complete the tournament at 8-under 856, five shots better than runner-up IUPUI at 3-under 861. Jacksonville State and Gardner-Webb tied for third at 1-under 863.

Junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) was the top player for James Madison, placing eighth at 3-under 213 following a final round 5-over 77. Playing in his first event as a Duke, junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C.) had a team-best even-par 72 in the last round to tie for 11th at even-par 216. Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand) was next in 19th at 1-over 217, while fellow freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md.) tied for 44th at 9-over 225. Sophomore Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) was the final Duke in a tie for 55th at 13-over 229.

Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston led from wire-to-wire, shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish at 11-under 205, four shots better than runner-up J.B. Williams from Akron.

The Dukes will return to the course at the 2013 VCU Shootout, Mon.-Tue., Sept. 23-24. The event will again be contested at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin Sabot, Va.
