HARRISONBURG, Va.- James Madison men’s soccer played with members of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County at University Park on Wednesday night. The players coached the clinic and each kid was given an autographed ball at the end.

“The players really want to do this and relish the interaction. It is just as rewarding for us as it is for them, and our boys act as great role models for these kids,” said head coach Tom Martin.

The men’s soccer players helped the kids be active and showed them that soccer can have a positive influence on their lives. It also exposed the kids to part of the college lifestyle.

“My favorite part was getting to know the kids. They have such great personalities, and it is fun to have joking interactions with them,” said redshirt junior Gene Daniels.

Each “Little” brother or sister was accompanied by his or her “Big” brother or sister as arranged through the mentorship organization. The day allowed the matches another opportunity to bond.

“We have players from all over the world that these kids get to meet. It is important that the players get the chance to share the game that they love to play and give back to the community while doing it,” said assistant head coach Tom Foley.
