John Kaltenborn joined the JMU staff in 2003 and brought the experience of being both a head athletic trainer and working in numerous professional settings. His primary responsibility is serving as an athletic trainer with the JMU football program and serving as an approved clinical preceptor for the JMU undergraduate athletic training program.  Kaltenborn was previously the men’s basketball athletic trainer from 2003-2013. 

Prior to coming to JMU, Kaltenborn spent two years at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. While at Fairfield, he was the head athletic trainer for both the Stags' football and women’s basketball programs. Also during this time, he was an approved clinical instructor for both Sacred Heart University and Salisbury University athletic training students.

Kaltenborn was the head athletic trainer for Fredonia State University in Fredonia, N.Y. from 1998-2001. At Fredonia State, he was responsible for coordinating sports medicine services for 19 Division III intercollegiate athletic teams as well as teaching within Fredonia’s athletic coaching minor. He also worked with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League while at Fredonia, working two mini-camps and one pre-season training camp.

Kaltenborn’s first job was at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. During his two years at SMSU, he was the head athletic trainer for the SMS men’s and women’s soccer, tennis, and golf programs. He was also an assistant athletic trainer for the SMS football program.

Kaltenborn earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic training from Salisbury University in 1994. While a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, he earned his master of science degree in rehabilitation science in 1996.  Kaltenborn is nationally certified by the Board of Certification and is a licensed athletic trainer by the Virginia Board of Medicine.  He also holds advanced certifications as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and is certified in the  Functional Movement Screen and Selective Functional Movement Assessment.

John and his wife Angela reside in Harrisonburg with their daughter Tori and twins Cameron and Corinna.
