Jackie Leonard joined the James Madison University Sports Medicine Department Staff as an assistant athletic trainer in August 2006. She was elevated to associate athletic trainer in 2011.  Leonard’s primary clinical responsibility is with the cross-country and track and field programs. She also provides clinical supervision for men's and women's tennis. In addition, Leonard is an approved clinical preceptor within the Athletic Training Education Program and provides clinical education and evaluation for the undergraduate athletic training students. Leonard previously worked with our field hockey program from 2006-2013

The former Jackie Downar, Leonard received her undergraduate degree at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in May 2000. She completed her master’s degree in sports health care from the Arizona School of Health Sciences in August 2002.

Prior to coming to JMU, Leonard most recently was the assistant athletic trainer at Texas Pan-American University in Edinburg, Texas. There she worked with a variety of their Division I sports programs including women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and baseball. Leonard is nationally certified by the Board of Certification and is a licensed athletic trainer by the Virginia Board of Medicine.  She also holds advanced certifications as a Corrective Exercise Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Leonard is also recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Leonard resides in Harrisonburg with her husband Jon.
