MORGANTON, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team led after the first round and has a slim one-shot lead in the second round when darkness suspended play at the 2012 Donald Ross Intercollegiate, Oct. 15. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club (Par 70 - 6,718 yards) in Morganton, N.C.
The tournament was delayed in getting started due to some early morning rain, which did not allow for completion of the second round. Madison opened the tournament with a 1-over 281 to take a four-shot lead over Western Carolina at 4-over 285 and five over Wofford in third at 5-over286. In the afternoon round, the Dukes finished up through 14 holes at 7-over for the second 18, leading at 8-over by one shot over Western Carolina and three over Wofford. However, Western Carolina has only scored through five holes and Wofford also had complete fewer holes than JMU.
Junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) was at 1-over 71 in the morning round but rallied to 1-under in the afternoon through 14 and is the top Duke in a tie for fifth at even-par. Sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) shot a 2-under 68 in the first round to tie for second and is currently at 2-over for the tournament in a tie for ninth. Junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa. /Malvern Prep.) is next in a tie for 16th at 3-over, which includes a 1-under 69 in the morning session. Freshman Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) is next in a tie for 28th at 5-over with a 3-over 73 in the first 18 and 2-over currently in the second round. Senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) posted a 6-over 76 in the morning but was at 2-over in the afternoon and 8-over total in a tie for 51st.
Appalachian State's Casey Komline is the current leader at 4-under after a 2-under 68 in the morning and is 2-under through 14 in the second round.
The teams will return to the course at 9 a.m., on Tuesday to finish the second round and the complete the final round of the tournament, weather permitting.
