Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to Duke

HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 12, 2012 – Forward Martine Chichizola scored on a penalty corner just under 13 minutes into the game and the Duke defense shut out the James Madison field hockey team to earn a 1-0 win at the James Madison Field Hockey Complex on Friday evening. 

The loss snapped JMU’s two-game winning streak and drops it to 8-5 on the season. Duke won for the second time in its last three games to improve to 6-8. 

Chichizola scored the game’s only goal, using three shots, including two on goal. Midfielders Chelsey Amsley and Abby Beltrani each assisted on the goal and forward Devon Gagliardi had a team-high seven shots. Forward Emmie Le Marchand and midfielder Aileen Johnson had three shots each. Back Brenna Rescigno contributed two shots, both of which were on goal. 

Offensively, the Dukes received two shots, including one on goal from redshirt junior forward Courtney Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent). Redshirt freshman forward Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) and freshman midfielder Saskia Chelmowski (Berlin, Germany/Gustav-Heinemann-Cherschule) fired one shot each. 

Lauren Blazing went the distance in net for the Blue Devils to earn the shutout victory. She improved to 4-5 on the season, making one save in 70 minutes of action. 

Freshman goalkeeper Lena Wimmert (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Lise-Meitner Gymnasium) made 10 saves in 70 minutes for Madison. She dropped to 8-5 despite giving up just the one goal. 

Duke outshot JMU 18-4 in the game and held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Dukes made 10 saves to one for the Blue Devils. 

Chichizola scored the game-winning goal at the 12:49 mark of the game. Amsley inserted the ball on a penalty corner to Beltrani who set it up for Chichizola. The sophomore's shot from just inside the scoring area started low, but deflected of a JMU stick and went up over Wimmert. It was Chichizola’s first goal of the season. 

JMU returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, as it hosts No. 17 Richmond at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
