“We are very excited to promote Dane to the position of associate head swim coach at JMU,” Smith said. “He has been an integral part of our success over the past five years and has proven to be an invaluable part of the swimming and diving family.”
Pedersen is entering his sixth season as an assistant at JMU. The team has improved its finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in each of his seasons with the team, highlighted by the sixth conference title in school history in 2012-13. Prior to his arrival in July of 2007, the team finished ninth at the 2006-07 CAA Championships.
In addition to team success, Pedersen has helped his student-athletes completely rewrite the JMU record book. In five years, every individual swimming record and all five relay events have seen a new school record set at least once with many records falling a handful of times.
Academically, the Dukes have received NCAA APR recognition for performing in the top 10 percent of all Division I programs during Pedersen’s time in Harrisonburg.
“I am honored to receive this promotion,” Pedersen said. “JMU is an amazing place and has been the perfect environment to learn and grow in my coaching career. I want to thank Mr. Bourne, Mrs. Phillips and all the administration for this acknowledgement. I also want to thank Sam and Becky who I work alongside every day. We have built a special program together, and I have learned so much from both of them. Lastly, I want to thank Sam for this recommendation. I have learned from her leadership, guidance and mentoring. I look forward to the things to come with JMU swimming and diving!”
