Women's Golf Finishes Fifth at UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The James Madison women's golf team wrapped up the final round and finished fifth at the 2012 UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament, Oct. 1-2. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by UNCG, was played at Starmount Forest Country Club (Par 71 - 6,265 yards) in Greensboro, N.C.

Madison posted  17-over 301 in the final round to finish fifth at 41-over 893 for the three-round event. East Tennessee State dominated the event, finishing at even-par 852, 24 shots ahead of runner-up Maryland, as ETSU shot a 2-under 282 in the final round, the best by 16 shots. East Carolina was third at 29-over 881, with Campbell in fourth at 36-over 888.

Sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) was the top JMU player, as she shot a 4-over 75 in the final round and tied for ninth at 7-over 220. It was her first top-10 placing of the year and second in her career. Sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) was one shot back after a final round 5-over 76, as she tied for 12th at 8-over 221, the top individual finish of her career. Junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) was next in a tie for 21st at 12-over 225, with freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) shooting a team-best 2-over 73 in the final 18 to move up to a tie for 30th at 14-over 227. Sophomore Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) tied for 61st at 23-over 236 after shooting a 6-over 77 in the last round. Playing as an individual, freshman Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) tied for 62nd at 20-over 233.

F. Gustafsson Spang from East Carolina led from wire-to-wire, finishing at 7-under 206 to take the individual title. Sian Evans of ETSU was second at 1-under 212, as the victorious ETSU Bucs had four of the top six individual scores in the tournament.

JMU will head back out to the course Fri.-Sun., Oct. 12-14 at the 2012 Mercedes Invitational. Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
