RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 18, 2012 – James Madison field hockey redshirt freshman forward Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. This is the second time in her career West has earned a conference accolade.
West scored a pair of goals last weekend to help lead the Dukes to a 2-0 record with a pair of overtime wins. She scored on a penalty stroke early in the second half of an eventual 3-2 win over Longwood on Friday before tallying the game-winning goal in double overtime in an upset of No. 18 Boston College on Sunday.
This season, the Princess Anne, Md. native leads the team with eight points and is tied for the team high in goals with three. In her career, West has nine goals and three assists for 21 points in just 10 games played.
This is the first time the redshirt freshman has garnered the conference Player of the Week accolade. Last season, she earned Rookie of the Week honors as a true freshman on Sept. 27 after scoring a hat trick against Drexel.
William & Mary midfielder Maria Caro shared the Player of the Week honors with West while Caro’s teammate, goalkeeper Cate Johnson, claimed the Rookie of the Week award.
JMU opens up CAA play this weekend with away games at No. 23 Drexel and Towson. The Dukes face the Dragons at 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday before moving on to Towson, Md. for a noon game on Sunday.
