Women's Golf Tied for 12th After 36 Holes of Cardinal Cup

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The James Madison women's golf team is in a tie for 12th after the first two rounds of the 2012 Cardinal Cup, Sept. 17. Hosted by the University of Louisville, the two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the Cardinal Club (Par 72 - 6,271 yards) in Simpsonville, Ky.

JMU opened the tournament with a 16-over 304 in the morning round to sit 10th but couldn't keep the rhythm and fell two spots by the end of the day.  The Dukes shot a 29-over 317 in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 45-over 621 to sit in a tie with Akron. Host Louisville is the two-round leader at 15-over 591, five shots ahead of Cincinnati in second. Missouri and Georgia State are tied for third at 23-over 599, with Chattanooga rounding out the top five at 25-over 601.

The Dukes are led by junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao), who shot a 1-under 71 in the morning but struggled to an 8-over 80 in the afternoon to place in a tie for 26th at 7-over 151. Freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) is next in a tie for 42nd at 10-over 154 with sophomore Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) at 14-over 158 in a tie for 56th. Sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) and freshman Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) are tied for 59th, one shot behind Wessels at 15-over 159. Playing as an individual, sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Phillipines/St. Paul College-Pasig) is tied for 15th at 5-over 149, including an even-par 72 in the first round. Louisville's Emily Hass is the 36-hole leader at 6-under 138, five shots ahead Taylor Gohn of Missouri in second, who is playing as an individual. They are the only players under par in the 87-player field.

All 15 teams will tee off at 8:40 a.m. in a shotgun start with the Dukes starting on No. 20 and playing with Maryland and UNCW. Legaspi will be starting on No. 17 individually.
