WILMINGTON, Del. - The James Madison men's golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 27. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the Wilmington Country Club's South Course in Wilmington, Del.
In a close-bunched top of the leaderboard, the Dukes shot an 18-over 306 in the opening round, with all five player scores in the 70s. Georgia State is the leader after 18 holes at 12-over 300, one shot ahead of UNCW in second at 13-over 301. VCU is in third at 17-over 306, with Old Dominion in fifth at 19-over 307. The top seven teams are only separated by 10 shots after the opening day of play.
Senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) and junior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) led Madison in the first round with each shooting a 4-over 76 and are tied for 13th. Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) are tied for 16th one shot back at 5-over 77. Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is tied for 25th after an opening round 6-over 78. Only two players were under par in the first round, as VCU's Marc Dobias shot a 2-under 70 and leads by one shot over Georgia State's Damon Stephenson.
JMU will play the second round on Sat., April 28 starting on No. 1 at 9 a.m., as the Dukes will be playing with Old Dominion and George Mason.
