MELBOURNE, Fla. - The James Madison men's golf team dropped four spots in the final round and finished 10th at the 2012 Wolfpack Spring Open, April 14-15. Hosted by NC State, the two-day, 36-hole tournament was played at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State (Par 72 - 7,358 yards) in Raleigh, N.C.
For the second straight day, the Dukes posted a 16-over 304 to finish at 32-over 608 in 10th, one shot out of a tie for eighth. Host NC State overcame a two-shot deficit to win, shooting a 5-under 283 to finish at 1-over 577. Lamar was the runner-up at 5-over 581, with East Carolina in third at 9-over 585. Middle Tennessee State was fourth at 14-over 590, with Louisville completing the top five at 20-over 596.
Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was the top JMU finisher in a tie for 21st at 5-over 149, shooting a team-best 1-over 73 in the final round. Senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) was next two shots back in a tie for 31st at 7-over 151. Junior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) tied for 48th at 10-over 154, with senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) next for JMU in a tie for 62nd at 13-over 157. Sophomore Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd (Newberry)) tied for 66th at 14-over 158. Lamar's Luke Jerling won the individual title with a 5-under 139, one shot better than Jay Mulieri of Loyola (Md.).
Madison will next be on the course competing for the Colonial Athletic Association title at the 2012 CAA Men's Golf Championship, Fri.-Sun., April 27-29 at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Del.
