DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The James Madison University cheer squad captured the 2012 National Cheerleading Association National Championship today in the Intermediate Coed Division. The Dukes scored an 8.620 to win by a considerable margin over runner-up Michigan, which scored an 8.400.
"We are thrilled to bring back a National Championship to JMU cheerleading and JMU," said head coach Kelly Moore. "All of our hard work has finally paid off. These cheerleaders are tremendous athletes, and I could not be more proud."
The 17-team field was whittled down to 10 finalists on Thursday, and JMU went into today's finals with the top spot. The Dukes improved their score today to capture the program's second national title, the first came in 1996.
Behind the University of Michigan was Marshall University (8.338), Weatherford College from Texas (8.430), defending champion Texas El Paso (8.335), Georgia Southern University (8.325), Rogers State University from Oklahoma (8.155), Utah Valley University (8.098), East Central University from Oklahoma (7.993), and Iowa State University (7.873).
"I want to send out a special thanks to the JMU athletic administration for all of its support. We could not do all of this with the entire JMU Nation. We look forward to coming home as a National Championship team," said Moore.
