HARRISONBURG, Va. (July 20, 2011) - James Madison University Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne has announced today that FedEx Field, home of the National Football League's Washington Redskins, will host the Dukes and West Virginia in a football game on Sept. 15, 2012. The game marks the first time that JMU will play at FedEx Field.
"This is a great opportunity for our football program to play a top-level FBS team in an area that is important to the University, our students, alumni and donors," Bourne says. "We look forward to the opportunities for outreach with this significant portion of the JMU Nation over the next year to ensure that Coach Matthews and the Dukes are well supported. It also gives our players a chance to play in one of the top stadiums in the National Football League and many of our fans another opportunity to watch the Dukes in action in close proximity to Harrisonburg."
The 2012 event marks the second meeting all-time with West Virginia, as the Dukes fell to the Mountaineers, 45-10, in Morgantown, W.Va., on Sept. 25, 2004. JMU eventually won the next six consecutive games and posted a 13-2 mark that season en route to the I-AA National Title, while the Mountaineers finished with an 8-4 record that season.
The Dukes enter the 2011 season after a 6-5 season in 2010, but did have its nationally-recognized win over eventual ACC champion Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last season. This year, Madison opens the season in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sept. 3, taking on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Practice for the preseason nationally-ranked Dukes opens on Aug. 8.
