Brian arrived at JMU in September 2009 after previously working at Cal State Bakersfield and the University of Louisville. During his tenure the Duke Club annual fund has increased from $1.31M to $1.81M, and membership has grown almost 50%.  Brian’s duties with the Duke Club include management of all annual fund strategies and solicitations, donor benefit fulfillment, coordination of various Duke Club chapter activities, and other assignments related to growing support for JMU Athletics.

At Cal State Bakersfield, Brian served as Development Coordinator for the Roadrunner Club.  There he helped set an all-time annual fund drive record, and helped manage events which brought in an additional $250K.  His other duties included coordinating all Roadrunner Club solicitations, co-managing monthly Roadrunner Club Board meetings, record keeping, and drafting of all fundraising materials and communication pieces.

Powell received his M.S. in Sport Administration from the University of Louisville where he interned in marketing and fundraising.  He received his undergraduate degree at Georgetown College (KY) where he majored in economics. Graduating Magna Cum Laude, Powell also received the Wall Street Journal Student Excellence Award for his studies. As a student-athlete, Powell served as captain of the Tiger baseball team. While in school, he also managed the intern staff for the Cincinnati Bengals training camp, worked for the Lexington Legends minor league baseball team, and worked as an assistant to the athletic director at Georgetown College.

Powell was born in Middlesboro, KY and has two brothers and one sister. His parents now reside in Lee County, VA.
