After four straight home games James Madison volleyball will end the season with three on the road, beginning with VCU and William and Mary this weekend. The Dukes travel to Richmond on Friday to take on VCU at 7 p.m. and continue East to Williamsburg on Saturday to face William and Mary at 7 p.m.
The team takes to the road after a two hard-earned wins last weekend against Georgia State and UNC Wilmington. The Dukes had four players with double-doubles to beat Georgia State 3-2 Friday. Holly Wall was the lead scorer of the night with 19 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Daneille Erb was close behind Wall with 18 kills and 12 digs. Lindsay Callahan also added to the Dukes offense with 14 kills, 10 digs, and split the team-high four blocks with Kelly Turner. The final double-double of the night went to freshman setter Megan Wiechmann, who had a career-high 57 assists and 12 digs. Natalie Abel had the most digs for the Dukes with 20.
The Dukes continued their win streak into Saturday, beating UNC Wilmington 3-1 in the last home game of the season. Danielle Erb led the JMU offense with a double-double on a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs. Junior Lindsay Callahan had nine kills, nine digs, and six blocks for the Dukes. Megan Wiechmann had another impressive game with 44 assists and nine digs. Kelly Turner and Holly Wall each scored double digit kills for the Dukes with 14 and 13 respectively. Natalie Abel again had the team-high digs with 21.
Opponents
VCU also won both its games last weekend. The Rams triumphed over Delaware 3-2 on Friday. Michala Kvapilova led her team in scoring with 14 kills and nine digs. Lenka Melicharkova had a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs. Other top scorers include Kelsie Clegg with 11 kills, and Mariel Frey with nine kills and 15 digs. The team went on to sweep Towson 3-0 on Saturday. Kvapilova had a double-double with team-high 12 kills and 10 digs. Melicharkova also had a double-double with 31 assists and 16 digs.
William and Mary had mixed results last weekend, beating Towson before losing to Delaware. The Tribe swept Towson 3-0 last Friday. Lauren Powell tied with Lindsay Kresch as the high scorer of the night with nine kills. Powell also had the team-high 14 digs. W&M went on to lose to Delaware 3-2 on Saturday. This time Lindsay Kresch and Ginny Bray tied for lead scorer with 11 kills each. Kresch turned hers into a double-double by adding 12 digs. Setter, Cassie Crumal, had 38 assists and nine digs.
Series History
JMU leads VCU in the all-time series with a margin of 36-22. JMU has lost only three times to VCU since 1995. When JMU and VCU met earlier this season on October 3, VCU swept the Dukes 3-0. Danielle Erb led the Dukes in scoring in that game with a double-double consisting of 10 kills and 11 digs. VCU was led by Michala Kvapilova who had 11 kills.
William and Mary leads JMU in the all-time series 37-32, although the teams split the last 10 games evenly. In a meeting earlier this season William and Mary beat JMU 3-2. Once again lead scorer for the Dukes was Danielle Erb with a double-double of 18 kills and 17 digs, followed closely by teammate Kelly Turner with 17 kills and five digs. W&M’s top scorer was Erin Skipper who had 23 kills and .438 hitting.
