RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 31, 2009 -- Senior Corky Julien (Williamstown, Ontario/Char-Lan District) scored twice and added an assist to lead the James Madison women's soccer team to a 4-0 win at Virginia Commonwealth in Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday evening.
With the victory in their regular-season finale the Dukes qualified for the four-team CAA Tournament, to be hosted by top-seeded Northeastern on Nov. 6 & 8.
JMU finished regular-season play with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 6-3-2 CAA record. The Dukes tied for fourth in the league standings with George Mason but earned the tournament berth by virtue of JMU's regular-season win over the Patriots.
VCU concluded its season with a 6-11-2 overall record and a 2-8-1 CAA record. The Rams lost their sixth straight match.
Northeastern earned the CAA Tournament's top seed by beating Hofstra 4-0 in Boston Saturday afternoon, and the Huskies will face the Dukes in one tournament semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Hofstra is seeded second and will meet third-seeded North Carolina Wilmington in Friday's other semifinal game at 3 p.m.
In the win over the Rams JMU scored on its first two shots on goal, starting with an attempt by Julien that found the net just 2:16 into the match. Junior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) delivered a pass from midfield to Julien, who sent a shot from 22 yards out into the right side of the goal.
For Rynier, it was her 37th career assist, giving her the Dukes' career record outright. She previously shared the record of 36 with Carrie Proost (1990-94).
The Dukes did not get another shot off until 20 minutes later. However, JMU made good on that try, as junior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) crossed the ball inside the box to freshman Amalya Clayton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), who scored from close range.
JMU took a 3-0 lead into intermission as Julien scored again just 1:31 before the halftime break. Senior Jess Remmes (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) served a ball to redshirt freshman Kelly Germain (McLean, Va./Langley), who chested the ball to Julien. Julien one-timed the ball into the goal from 12 yards away.
The Dukes' fourth score came 10:57 into the second period. Tisinger sent a pass to Julien, who delivered the ball to redshirt sophomore Jessica Barndt (Novi, Mich./Novi) for a four-yard shot that crossed the goalline.
JMU held a 12-10 advantage on shots, and Dukes' redshirt junior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made a four saves in just over 80 minutes of play. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Stephanie Poucher (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished out the game but did not need to make a save. The shutout was JMU's seventh of the year and fourth shutout in the last five matches.
VCU goalkeeper Kate Hudson finished with a single save.
Julien increased her school records to seven season game-winning scores and 19 career game-winners. She also moved into second place on JMU's career points list with 102, passing Therese Wolden (1995-98), who had 101 points.
