From Hofstra Reports
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 31, 2009 -- Freshman Markus Bjørkheim(Bergen, Norway/Fana Gymnas) scored two goals and assisted on two other scores to pace JamesMadison to a 6-2 men's soccer win at Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon.
JMU improved its overall record to 9-5-2 and its CAA record to 4-4-1.
Hofstra's record is now 8-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in league play.
Bjørkheim, playing in just his fourth game of the season, scored twice in a span of 46 seconds to break a 2-2 deadlock. Less than two minutes after his second goal, he got an assist on another Dukes' score.
In a game played in heavy winds, the Dukes played the first half with the wind at their backs and got two early goals from junior CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park).
Sapong's first goal came on a header off a corner kick from junior Stefan Durr (Garmisch, Germany/Munich International) 7:45 into the match.
Less than seven minutes later, Sapong headed in another goal, this time off a long diagonal cross from redshirt freshman Christian McLaughlin (Herndon, Va./ Herndon). McLaughlin was near the right sideline and sent a ball across to the far side of the penalty box. Hofstra sophomore goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone came out to play the ball but the wind carried the ball to Sapong, who sent a 15-yard header into the empty net at 14:29.
Hofstra was able to tie the game with scores in the 30th minute and 11:33 into the second half.
The Pride's first score came when freshman Stephan Barea was played in behind the JMU defense by senior Rory McCrea. Barea broke into the left side of the box, and beat redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Justin Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton).
In the second period with the wind at its back, Hofstra pulled even on a play that started with a free kick by senior Rob Youhill. The ball was flicked ahead by Barea to sophomore Brett Carrington. Carrington was able to settle the ball inside the six-yard box and send a shot into the net.
Bjørkheim, though, turned the game around. He first took a shot that hit the post less than one minute after Carrington's tying goal, then missed just wide five minutes later.
However, he finally converted the tie-breaking goal at 65:34 when he was played in behind the defense by senior Joel Senior (Kingston, Jamaica/Archbishop Carroll) and tucked a shot into the right side of the net.
Forty-six seconds later, Bjørkheim struck again as Sapong played a ball behind the Hofstra defense off a turnover. Björkheim chipped a shot past Cumpstone and into the left side of the net to push the Dukes' lead to 4-2 at 66:20.
Less than two minutes later, Bjørkheim changed into a playmaking role as he took a pass from Sapong inside the box and laid it back to sophomore Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale). Innes blasted a shot inside the left post to make the score 5-2 at 68:13.
Bjørkheim capped off his six-point second half when he played Durr alone into the box along the right side. Durr faked a shot, getting Cumpstone to dive on the ground, and then tapped the ball by and slotted it into an empty net.
JMU finished with a 16-8 edge in shots. Epperson had two saves, and sophomore defender Jason Gannon (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill) cleared an early shot from Barea off the line with the score still 0-0. Cumpstone had three saves for Hofstra.
