WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 30, 2009 – Sarah Pergine’s rebound goal on a penalty corner after time expired lifted Iowa to a 3-2 victory over James Madison in a non-conference field hockey match Friday afternoon at American University.
Iowa improved to 7-9 on the season. JMU, ranked 11th nationally in the Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, fell to 11-7 and lost for the third time in its last four matches.
The Hawkeyes drew a penalty corner as the clock ran out. Tricia Dean’s initial shot was saved by JMU senior goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland). However, Pergine was able to get a stick on the ball before it landed and found the cage for the game winner.
Iowa led in shots 14-7 and penalty corners 8-4. Cutchins had six saves for the Dukes while Kathleen Mcgraw made one stop for the Hawkeyes.
The tie was set up by a penalty-stroke goal by freshman Tori Lindsey (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), her team-leading 12th goal of the season. The goal was set up when Iowa’s Chelsea Miller blocked a JMU shot on goal with her body. Lindsey moved into a tie for fourth in JMU history in freshman points with 25, passing Traci Forchetti (1998) and matching Traci Davis (1978).
JMU also scored the first goal of the contest in the 16th minute as junior Randi Segear (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) fired at the goal with a deflection from junior Amy Daniel (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).
Iowa scored less than a minute after JMU’s initial strike with Meghan Beamesderfer connection on a penalty corner from the top of the circle with assists from Dean and Pergine. The other Hawkeye goal came in the 52nd minute in the second half with Sarah Drake scoring with an assist from Jess Werley.
JMU will close the regular season with a 2 p.m. match on Sunday at Northeastern with the Dukes most likely needing a win in order to secure a spot in the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association championship.
