James Madison’s Purple and Gold teams split a pair of games this past weekend at Long Field/Mauck Stadium during the annual intrasquad Purple & Gold Series. Purple leads the series 2-1.
Gold won Friday afternoon 15-4 in a game shortened to five innings because of slaughter rule. Trevor Knight earned the win after recording five strikeouts in four innings pitched. Knight was multi-dimensional for the Gold team as he also recorded three walks and three runs, two of which came on a home run. Gold sophomore outfielder Beau Banglesdorf had two doubles and a single. Junior McKinnon Langston went 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBIs and two runs.
Junior James Weiner took the loss for Purple. Senior Kent Burford hit a double as Purple’s lone offensive highlight in the loss.
On Saturday afternoon Purple rebounded by winning 9-4. Freshman Johnny Bladel struck out one batter in four innings in the win. Senior Alex Foltz led the offense with a home run. Senior Matt Townsend and junior David Herbek both hit doubles and Burford hit two singles. The game was officially put out of reach when freshman Matt Tenaglia went deep on a three-run home run. Junior Kevin Munson, who does not have a plate appearance in his JMU career, was thrown into the mix in the outfield and also homered for Purple.
Knight continued his MVP-worthy play for the Gold team by hitting two solo home runs, a single, two runs and two RBIs on Saturday.
Sunday’s game was postponed and the series schedule altered due to a number of illnesses on the team. Game four has been rescheduled for Wednesday as a part of Scout Day. If Gold avoids elimination by winning game four, then the teams will meet again Friday for game five. The length of each game will depend on pitching as both bullpens have been hit by illness and inning limits.
Wednesday’s Scout Day will open up at 1:30 for batting practice. Then 60 yard dashes will be timed, followed by infield and outfield drills, and the game. Additional pitchers could have bullpen sessions on the mound if they do not see action in the game.
Friday’s series opener, which featured top pitching prospects Kevin Munson, Turner Phelps, and Kyle Hoffman, drew an estimated dozen scouts to Long/Mauck. JMU anticipates scouts from greater than half of the 30 Major League organizations in attendance for Scout Day on Wednesday. Scout Day and all Purple & Gold Series games are open to the public with free admission.
